GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: Unreal Condition IF Clause Not in Appropriate Sentences (5-6 minutes) ( 仮定法 if 節の文内での誤用 ) Unreal Condition means the speaker is speaking of a situation or condition that is not true or real. ( 仮定法は現実にはない状況や現実ではない場面を話し手が説明していることを意味します ) A present unreal condition uses the past tense in the IF clause and would, could, should, or might in the main clause. ( 仮定法現在では if 節の中で過去形を用い主節の中では would could should あるいは might を用います ) Examples ( 例 ) : I don t have the strength to perform in front of the audience. ( 私は聴衆の前で演説をするだけの強靭さを持ち合わせていません ) If I had the strength to perform in front of an audience, I would audition in this theater. ( もしも聴衆の前で演説するだけの強靭さを持ち合わせていたらこの劇場のオーディションを受けるんですが ) I am a woman so I couldn t play the role of Romeo. ( 私は女性なのでロミオ役を演じることができません ) If I were a man, I would play the role of Romeo. ( もしも私が男性ならロミオの役を演じるのですが ) In past unreal condition, past perfect form is used in the main verb indicating the action hoped to be done. ( 仮定法過去では好ましい動作を指し示す主節内で過去完了形が用いられます ) Page 3

4 Pattern: If + subject + had + past participle verb, subject + modal (would, could, should or might) + have + past participle verb ( 構文 :If + 主語 + had + 動詞の過去分詞形, 主語 + 法助動詞 (would could should might) + have + 動詞の過去分詞形 ) Examples ( 例 ) : I got sick so another actress replaced my role. ( 私が病気になったので別の女優が私の役を代わりに演じました ) If I had not gotten sick, I should not have been replaced by another actress. ( 私が病気にかからなければ別の女優が私の役を代わりに演じることもなかったはずです ) Jean did not memorize her lines well so she couldn t perform well on stage. ( ジーンは自分の台詞をよく覚えていなかったので舞台でうまく演じることができませんでした ) If Jean had memorized her lines well, she could have performed well on stage. ( もしジーンが自分の台詞をしっかり覚えていれば彼女は舞台でうまく演じることができたはずです ) Remember: The verb were is always used for unreal conditions whether the noun/pronoun in the IF clause is singular or plural. It is incorrect to say If I was or If he was, instead it should be If I were or If he were. (if 節内の名詞や代名詞が単数形でも複数形でも仮定法では常に動詞 were が用いられます If I was や If he was と言うのは誤りで代わりに If I were や If he were が用いられなければなりません ) Comprehension Check: Fill in the blanks with the appropriate words/phrases.
