Mills College Graduate School Broadcast Education Association A Study of Media Literacy of Primary and Secondary School Students Kumiko Mukaida Akira Sakamoto Nobuo Issiki Tsutako Mori Kanae Suzuki Mami Komaya Makiko Sado We explored how childrens media literacy on TV develops according to their age. We defined media literacy as having four subdivisions: recognizing of commercialism, identifying of media messages as constructed reality, evaluating of contents, and identifying of form and strategy. sixth-graders and ninth-graders answered open questions measuring their media literacy. About half of the students seemed to recognize commercialism. On the other hand, -% of the students did not seem to understand constructed reality of mass media. Ninth-graders have more knowledge about form and strategy of media than six-graders. On the whole, ninth-graders seemed to have a better understanding of media than sixth-graders. In future research, we need to refine the way of measuring media literacy and identify its developmental phase more clearly.
