The Effect of Pre-Season Running Training for Game Performance of University Baseball Pitcher AKAIKE, Kohei This paper provides useful information for university baseball players and coaches as well as amateur baseball players. Almost all amateur baseball teams in Japan make time for running training during baseball pitchers practice. There are few evidence-based guidelines for running training, so this research will provide some underlying principles for pre-season running training programs for pitchers. This study involved three groups. The first group contained the members of a university baseball team whose running training included middle distance running, which aimed to improve the subjects lactate thresholds, and short sprints, which were designed to improve their sprinting ability (the MD1 group; study period: from December 2012 to June 2014). The second group contained the members of a university team whose running training included wind sprinting, which aimed to improve their running form (the WS group; study period: from June 2014 to December 2015). The last group contained the members of a university baseball team whose running training involved larger amounts of middle distance running and short sprints than the MD1 group (the MD2 group; study period: from December 2015 to June 2016). The MD2 group performed the short sprints fastest. However, there were no differences in agility or and lactic acid tolerance among the groups.
76 2 2017 3 As for the pitching results obtained during the official university baseball tournament, the pitchers who did extremely well in the tournament tended to be from groups MD1 and MD2. So this study suggests that pitching ability is based on high potential and training involving programs targeting the lactate threshold, short sprinting ability. We conclude that pre-season running training for university baseball pitchers must include exercises aimed at improving maximum speed and effort as well as middle distance running and short sprints.
