Subjective satisfaction was assessed by affects. An affect was recorded by observing facial expressions, body language and the voice. In survey 1, we observed facial expressions, body language and voice for 16 persons withsenile dementia in a nursing home for 10 hours and a half. Various affects could be assessed through observation of facial expression, body language and voice. We classified these affects. These classifications were almost all in agreement with the Philadelphia Geriatric Center Affect Rating Scale (ARS). In survey 2, we tried to grade their affects. We putaplusasapositive affect and aminus as a negative affect. We tried to use this modified ARS for 6 persons twice from morning to evening. Results showed that at 12:00 and 15:00, when they ate, was higher than the other times at 17:00 and 11:30 when they were hungry and tired. The results of survey 1 were almost equal to 2. Therefore, we thought that the modified ARS was effective for assessing subjective satisfaction in people withsenile dementia.
