A questionnaire survey was conducted on 97 workplace supervisors of graduates working at their institution for less than one year regarding the clinical competencies of novice nursing staff. Simple tabulation of the results revealed particularly poor evaluations for the following items: proactive learning and social behavior category: basic attitudes and approaches required by nurses ; nursing implementation based on firm evidence and accurate nursing skills category: nursing skills ; and, efficient nursing implementation category: administrative aspects. Content analysis of free responses revealed the following three categories of aspects requiring consideration during university education: basic nursing competencies; judgment as a working adult; and applied nursing practice. The attitudes and approaches required by working nurses should be cultivated through a study skills course introduced from the present academic year first year education and training during extracurricular activities. The divergence between educational and clinical settings with regard to the skills and management aspects required of novice nurses indicates a need for improving the basic nursing abilities of students and providing post-graduate skills support while establishing greater cooperation with clinical institutions. In order to enhance the nursing competencies of graduates.
