Grammar Review( 文法の復習 ) (5-10 min) Reported Speech Whenever we report or tell what other people have said, we do not usually repeat the exact words they used (this is called direct speech). Rather, we use the reported or indirect speech using the ff. patterns: 1. He says / said that. We use this pattern if the direct speech is a declarative sentence, meaning the person is stating a fact. Examples: He says, I speak English. He says that he speaks English. He said, I like studying English. He said that he liked studying English. 2. He asked (me/her/him) whether/ if. We use this pattern if the direct speech is an interrogative sentence, meaning the person is asking a question answerable by yes or no. Examples: He said to me, Do you speak English? He asked me whether/if I spoke English. He said to me, Does Larry speak English? He asked me whether/if Larry spoke English. 3. He told (me / her / him) to. We use this pattern if the direct speech is an imperative sentence, meaning the person is requesting someone to do something. Page 3

直接話法と間接話法話したことについて 引用符 ( ) を用いてそのまま伝える方法を直接話法といい 内容を自分の言葉に直して伝える方法を間接話法といいます このレッスンでは 直接話法と間接話法の用法を学習します 平叙文の場合話した内容が平叙文 ( 事実をそのまま述べる文 ) の場合 間接話法では 話者 + say + that となります 直接話法を間接話法に変換する際は 時制の一致と主語に注意が必要です 例文 : He says, I speak English. [ 直接話法 ] He says that he speaks English.[ 間接話法 ] ( 私は英語を話します と彼は言います ) 疑問文の場合 話した内容が疑問文の場合 間接話法では 話者 + ask + 人 + whether/if となり ます 例文 : He said to me, Do you speak English? [ 直接話法 ] He asked me whether / if I spoke English.[ 間接話法 ] ( あなたは英語を話しますか? と彼は私にたずねます ) 命令文の場合 話した内容が命令文の場合 間接話法では 話者 + tell + 人 + to 不定詞 となります 例文 : He said to me, Speak English.
