Example: I wish I knew the answer. (It s possible I might find out the answer) If only is stronger. It is often used to express regret for things that can (now) never happen. the past) Example: If only I knew the answer. (I didn t know the answer and there is no changing 2) We may use the simple past of be after I wish and If only, especially in everyday speech. I wish I was on a holiday now. If only Tessa was here now. If we want to be more formal, we use the subjunctive verb form (used to show suggestions/ wishes/ uncertainty/ possibility) were in all persons. 願望を表す仮定法 [wish / If only] 現実と異なる仮定や願望を述べるために動詞を特別な形で使う用法を仮定法といいます このレッスンでは であればいいのに という< 現在の事態と反対の願望 >や< 過去に実現できなかったことに対する願望 >を表す wish と If only の用法を学習します 仮定法で現在の事態に対する願望を表す場合 一般動詞は過去形が用いられますが be 動詞は主語の人称や単数 複数に関係なく were を用いるのが原則です ( ただし 口語 ( 日常会話 ) では1 人称 3 人称単数には was も用いられます ) 一方 過去の事態に対する願望を表す場合には 動詞の過去完了形を用います If only は wish よりも強い意味をもち < 現在実現不可能な願望 >や< 過去に実現できなかったことに対する残念さ>を表します 例文 : I wish I knew the answer. ( 私が答えを知っていればいいのですが ) 実現するかもしれない願望を表す If only your mother were alive now. ( 今あなたのお母さんが生きてさえいればいいのですが ) 実現不可能な願望 後悔を表す I wish I had known then what I know now. ( 今知っていることを そのとき知っていればよかったのですが ) 他の人や物に対する願望を持つ場合は would を用いたり 現在不可能なことを表す場合に can の過去形 could を用いたりすることもあります 例文 : I wish you would turn your music down.
