17 The Representation of Chinese American Woman on the U.S. Television Series, Ally McBeal Yumi Matano This paper examines the representation of Chinese American woman, Ling Wooplayed by Lucy Liuwho regularly appears on the popular television series, Ally McBeal and its meaning in the U.S. society. In my findings, while she is represented as Dragon Lady which is one of the perpetuating stereotypes of Asian women, there are a lot of scenes that her representation is in a non-stereotypical way. The former is a discriminatory figure and might promote the biased view against them. In addition, it gives consistency and justification of the notion that white people have supremacy over the society and monopolize the profit, which was shared among those in power when the Constitution of the United States was established in This problematic depiction deviates from the public interest that media is supposed to serve to. However, the latter connotes the possibility to resolve discrimination and prejudice against Asian American Women and improve the representation of them on the U.S. media contents.
