(2010) 3 A Consideration about Clinical Signs in Cats with Borna Disease Seiichi MACHIDA, Tomoyo KAWAMURA, Yumi UNE, Keizo TOMONAGA, Daisuke HASEGAEA, Hiromitsu ORIMA Abstract. For 21 cases of cats presenting with cerebral signs and in which extracranial disease was ruled out, the findings were negative for feline immunodeficiency virus, feline leukemia virus, and Toxoplasma gondii, and the feline corona virus antibody titer was 100 or less, we used the Western blotting method to detect antibodies for major antigens of Borna disease virus (BDV) in the serum. According to the results, 8 out of the 21 cases (38%) were positive for BDV antibodies (6 cases were positive for anti-p antibodies and anti-n antibodies, and 2 cases were positive for anti-p antibodies). For 3 of these cases, we performed histopathological examinations and immunohistological examinations, and then detected the BDV-p40 through Nested RT-PCR. Characteristic histopathological changes included cerebral cortical lesions, particularly nerve cell degeneration in the hippocampus, and in all 3 cases, BDV infection was observed in the immunohistological examinations and PCR. 2 4 cases included epileptic seizures, hyperexcitability, prowling, and Horner s syndrome, and of these signs, focal epileptic seizures and hyperexcitability were believed to be the characteristic clinical signs of BDV infection in cats.
