1 Planned Happenstance 1 Measuring Career Skills for Utilized Circumstances referred to the Planned Happenstance Theory Masanori URAKAMI, Mutsumi TAKATSUNA, Hideharu SUGIMOTO, Yumiko YAZAKI This study attempted to develop a scale to measure career skills that utilize everyday circumstances, and determine its reliability and validity. A scale measuring interpersonal ties skill that increase the social connectedness was added to five skills based upon the planned happenstance theory (Mitchell et al., 1999). Undergraduate students participated in a questionnaire study. Finally, 6 subscales were identified: curiosity, persistence, flexibility, optimism, start/initiative (risk taking), and interpersonal ties. This scale had high internal consistency and test-retest reliability. While the scale was positively correlated with time perspective and the positive aspects of ambiguity tolerance, it was negatively correlated with the negative aspects of ambiguity tolerance. High scores mostly indicate participation in off-campus activities and part-time employment. In addition, low skills related with low participation for various activities and less utilization of the surrounding environment.
