1 Journal of Phytogeography and Taxonomy :-, 00 The Society for the Study of Phytogeography and Taxonomy 00, Fagus lucida Fagus engleriana Zheng-Xiang Wang,, Kazue Fujiwara and Yun Lei : Phytosociological study of the Fagus lucida forests and Fagus engleriana forests in China College of Resources and Environmental Science, Hubei University, Xueyuanlu, Wuchang-Ku, Wuhan, 00, China ; Graduate School of Environment and Information Sciences, Yokohama National University, Tokiwadai 9, Hodogaya-ku, Yokohama 00, Japan Abstract Phytosociological studies on Fagus lucida forests and F. engleriana forests were carried out in China. Four associations were recognized, based on phytosociological data from relevés : ASinarundinario bashersuto- Fagetum lucidae ; BSinarundinario chungii-fagetum lucidae ; CSinarundinario nitido-fagetum lucidae ; D Fagetum engleriano-lucidae. These associations belong to a new alliance : Aceri davidii-fagion lucidae. Comparison of the dominant species and life-form structure of the associations showed that the characteristics of deciduous and evergreen broad-leaved mixed forests are remarkable in nd B. Bamboos occurred over a wide range in nd B, and the evergreen broad-leaved trees are dominated in understory tree layer and shrub layer. There are more coniferous trees in C and D, but Bamboos are sparse. By analysis of climatic factors, there are big differences in the distribution of every association according to temperature and humidity. The growth environment of F. lucida forests and F. engleriana forests in China is warmer than that of Fagus forests in Japan. Key words : alliance, association, Chinese Fagus forests, phytosociology.
