The study sample was 2,282 nurse managers from 681 hospitals in Japan. Respondents completed a 48-item multiple-choice questionnaire. Alpha coefficients were computed to examine the initial consistency of MaINr ; principal component analysis was also performed for the 8 items in each six categories of MaINr. Finally, the validity was analyzed based on Messicks unified theory of construct validity. Analysis found that the alpha coefficients of reliability for the categories ranged from Analysis also yielded sufficient evidence for the construct aspect of validity of the index. Content aspect of validity was ascertained by a pool of experts. The structural validity of the index was examined by computing correlation coefficients between categories, which ranged from However, the attempt to establish the external aspect of validity by calculating the correlations between MaINr scores and years of experiences as a nurse manager, hospital size, and the experience of undergoing the examination of the Japan Council for Quality Health Care lacked sufficient confirmation. Further examination is needed to improve the accuracy of this index so that it can be a more useful tool for the professional practice of nurse managers.
