Course Japanese 8 Grammar A (advanced) Course No. XJ08012 Grade Year Timetable SprAB Mon3 Instructor SANGHEE AHN Course Overview Students will learn advanced grammar points while reviewing those learned at the intermediate level. In this course students will master the ability to correctly understand and produce grammar patterns related to Japanese structure, and will learn in depth about the grammar s meaning and usage. Remarks For International Students Course Type class exercises Objective(s) Students will learn advanced-level grammar and understand more complex Japanese used in both written and spoken language. They will also be able to understand the pragmatic features of Japanese in order to communicate smoothly. Schedule Weeks 1 : Orientation We will study one unit per week. Week 10 : Final exam Please bring your textbook to class, as we will follow one unit from the textbook every week. Prerequisites Students must already possess pre-advanced level grammar proficiency. Remarks For International Students Course Type class exercises Objective(s) This course will use listening materials of up to 30 minutes in length which have unclear speech and are from a a wide range of topics including specialized information. In addition to goals from Japanese 7 Listening, students will aim to listen in ways that reflect certain needs, and integrate other skills (e.g. writing: listen to an interview program, and summarize it in writing), etc. Schedule Week 1: Orientation/Level check test Weeks 2 to 9: Dictation, identifying sound changes, identifying interpersonal relationships, taking notes, summarizing Week 10: Final exam Prerequisites Students who have listening competence equivalent to having completed Japanese 7 Listening. For International Students class exercises The aim of this course is to improve advanced reading skills. Students will be provided with texts from many genres including both academic and literary. By the end of the course, students will be expected to be able to recognize stylistic features and organization of the texts, and to understand the main argument and author s intention. They will participate in group discussion in order to enhance their comprehension. Students should have Japanese proficiency of J7 or higher. Kanji level of 6 or higher is desirable.
