Core Ethics Vol. The Life Story of a Father Who Has a Daughter with Schizophrenia: To Understand a Part of an Individuals Life with Complexity AOKI Hidemitsu Abstract: Recently, many parents of children with schizophrenia have been empowered by self-help groups and psychoeducational therapies; however, it is worth seriously considering whether or not these programs really palliate such parents suffering effectively. Also worth considering is the possibility that existing research about parents with schizophrenia may be lumping them together into an aggregate image that is dangerous because it blocks flexible family care. In order to avoid these problems, this paper, based on an interview with the father of a schizophrenic daughter, uses the life-story method to present the actual story of a real individual. Looking at the fathers case using a holistic perspective, this paper clarifies four points: () the difference between the fathers and the mothers sense of self-reproach; () the necessity of the paternal presence for reducing the daughters sense of isolation; () the difficulty of the conflict between father and daughter over her transfer to a psychiatric hospital; () the fathers complex feeling of faint hope for the daughters restitution. These findings suggest that the situation of each parent of a schizophrenic child should be considered beyond simple value judgments such as positive or negative. In addition, custom-made support for each parents needs is reaffirmed. Keywords: schizophrenia, father, daughter, life story
