The Bulletin of the Institute of Human Sciences, Toyo University, No.18 Abstract Similarities and Differences in Japanese and Chinese Passive Sentences WANG Yaxin This paper analyzes the semantic and syntactic features of passive sentences in Japanese and Chinese. There are many types of passive sentence variations in both languages. Due to semantic and syntactic restrictions, the subject (topic) of passive sentence represents both of the patient as an acted role and the affectee as an affected role in Japanese, but mainly as the affectee in Chinese. This paper analyzes the similarities and differences in Japanese and Chinese passive sentences from the standpoint of contrastive linguistics.
