JGSS-2008 The Influence of Affective Factors on English Reading and Conversation Proficiency among Japanese from the Data of JGSS-2008 Kaoru KOISO Faculty of Business Administration Osaka University of Commerce In second language acquisition affective factors such as motivation or attitude toward L2 speakers are closely related to proficiency. Those with positive attitude toward L2 speakers are more likely to be successful learners. There has been a number of research on affective factors and English proficiency, however much of this has been researched in class room environments. Based on the data of JGSS-2008, this study examines the influence of affective factors on English reading and conversation proficiency among Japanese adults. The results show the following: Affective factors have a stronger influence on conversation proficiency than on reading proficiency. The effect of direct contact with L2 speakers has been clearly demonstrated. In the younger generation it seems that English has been used not only for communication with native speakers but also as a communication tool with non-native speakers. In the older generation those with high self-efficacy have a higher level of proficiency.
