1 Japanese Journal of Applied Psychology 2014, Vol. 40, No. 2, ) * Donations and Money-Beliefs, Empathy, and Normative Attitudes About Helping after Great East Japan Earthquake Nobuko WATANABE* Relationships between money donations after the disaster caused by the Great East Japan Earthquake, and money beliefs, empathy, as well as normative attitudes toward helping were investigated, three months after the Great East Japan Earthquake. University students (N 603) responded to a questionnaire. Results indicated that high empathic and high normative about helping related with domination behavior. Moreover, empathy and normative attitudes toward helping, as well as Money Beliefs Scale scores could discriminate between donation and nondonation groups. Furthermore, there were significant negative correlations between negative effects and the frequency of making donations, and positive effects and the sum of donations. The main reasons given for failure to donate were lack of money and lack of knowledge about volunteer groups.
