1 No.110, The Burmanization Policy under the Japanese Occupation in Burma Yoshinari TAKESHIMA Accepted November 29, 2006 抄録 : 索引語 : Abstract : The aim of this paper is to give a concrete account of the difference between cultural policies in South-East Asian countries under the Japanese occupation. For that purpose, I choose the situation in Burma in which Japanization was not as necessary. I pay attention to the Burmanization Policy, while I critically examine previous studies that have used the degree of Japanization as an index of cultural policy. Also, I analyze the Anti-English language movement, the official use of Burmese, the Burmanization of names of streets, and the construction of monuments. I also mention the continuing inquiry of Burma culture, and composition of patriotic songs that was already performed in Burma before the war.
