MI The promotion of Howard Gardner s Multiple Intelligence Theory in Asia Comparative study on China, South Korea and The Philippines Hongshi LI, Yoko ICHIKAWA, BeomJin CHEON, Wei Keh CHIN Dai SHI and Hideaki SHIBUYA Abstract Under the influence of the constructivist learning theory on education in various Asian countries, the expansion of Howard Gardner s MI theory, being one of the typical representatives had been different in China, Korea and The Philippines as compared to Japan. Through documentary reviews and field surveys, the purpose of this study is to find out as to why MI theory and its implementation had been popularized in China, South Korea and The Philippines by analyzing the factors for promotion in each of the three counties, looking into the background for acceptance of the theory in each country, the research carried out on the theory, the system supporting the expansion of the theory in schools and the promotion of the theory outside the schools system from the perspective of comparative studies. The introduction of MI theory into educational practice in these countries began around the year 2000, with each country carrying the intention of making sure that their education meets the future needs as well as improving the quality of education for human resource development. By comparing the circumstances affecting the promotion of the theory in China, Korea and The Philippines, it can be said that the following 3 conditions were necessary in order to facilitate the promotion of the theory. 1) The speed of the introduction of MI theory was influenced by the initiatives taken by local educational administrators and the degree of discretion granted to schools and the teachers on their teaching methodologies and for them to attend training programs. 2) The extensive understanding of MI theory was related to the language used in that country. 3) Sufficient economic support was required to realize the practical implementation of the theory. As for Japan, in contrast to the above, none of the conditions were met.
