7 Abstract Objective: The of primary mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT) -type lymphomas arising from thyroid gl occasionally poses serious problems for obtaining a differential diagnosis from Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT). We compared cytological findings of primary thyroid MALT-type lymphomas with those of HT. Study design: Eight cases of primary thyroid MALT-type lymphomas 5cases of HT were retrospectively investigated using cytological, histomorphological, immunohistochemical methods. Results: The predominant cell component in HT was small lymphocytes. On or h, in MALT-type lymphomas, medium-sized with indented nuclei pale cytoplasm (centrocyte-like ; CCL ) occupied more than 40% of lymphoid. Occasional plasma plasmacytoid were intermingled with CCL. Morever, presence of lymphoepilial lesions (LEL) follicular coloniza- tion, characteristic histological findings of MALT-type lymphomas, were also indentified in specimens.
8 Conclusion : The diagnosis of primary thyroid MALT-type lymphomas are occasionally difficult when based only on cytological features.
