15 Topographical Relationship of the Lymph Nodes Surrounding the Abdominal Aorta, the Inferior Mesenteric Artery, and the Superior Hypogastric Plexus K. Sato and T. Sato Second Department of Anatomy, Faculty of Medicine, Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Tokyo Detailed dissections were performed on adult cadavers to provide basic topographical data on lymph node distribution for operations for cancer of the sigmoid colon and rectum. 1) The lymphatics ascending along the inferior mesenteric artery from the sigmoid colon and rectum are generally classified into four groups : right, left, superior and inferior. These four groups are named according to their position at the origin of the inferior mesenteric artery. The right group ascends to the middle part of the interaorticovenous nodes. The superior group, after draining into the pre-aortic nodes, ascends to reach the upper part of the interaorticovenous nodes. The left group ascends to the middle part of the latero-aortic nodes. The inferior group is subclassified into the following two groups : principal and accessory. The principal inferior group first runs to the lower part of the pre-aortic nodes and then to the interaorticovenous and latero-aortic nodes. The accessory inferior group, from the lymph nodes along the superior rectal artery, bypasses the lymph nodes at the root of the inferior mesenteric artery and runs directly to the lower lymph nodes surrounding the abdominal aorta. 2) The incidence of the level of the bifurcation of the superior hypogastric plexus in 84 specimens was : L4/L5, 2 ; L5, 20 ; L5/S1, 42; S1, 20.
