The world s first weather satellite capable of taking images in full color, it also delivers clearer images than its predecessor, the Himawari-7, taking them every 0 minutes where Himawari-7 took them at 30-minute intervals. It can even cover small ranges, such as the area of a typhoon, in 2.5-minute intervals, and is expected to contribute to increasing the accuracy of weather forecasts. Images taken by Himawari-8 may be viewed on the website of the Japan Meteorological Agency. Another World Cultural Heritage Site in Japan The World Heritage Committee, which convened in Germany under the aegis of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization), made a decision to inscribe the Sites of Japan s Meiji Industrial Revolution on the World Heritage List. The site consists of a total of 23 facilities, including Hashima Coal Mine, nicknamed Gunkanjima (battleship island) (Nagasaki City); the Former Shuseikan site, which consists of the remains of a machine factory and reverberatory furnace built by the Satsuma Clan (Kagoshima City); and the Nirayama Reverberatory Furnace, which was actually put into operation at the end of the Edo Period and is the only such furnace extant in Japan today (Izunokuni City, Shizuoka Prefecture). 3 Q&A: What is the difference between ice cream and soft cream? Q What is the difference between soft cream and ice cream? (Norihito Masuda, 3rd grade, Taito Ward, Tokyo) A Freshly made ice cream is called soft cream Soft cream cones were first sold in Japan on July 3, 95, during a festival hosted by Americans at Meiji Jingu Gaien Park (Shinjuku Ward, Tokyo). Thereafter, in the same year, a trading company called Nissei began selling soft cream in Japan. At that time, the founder of Nissei, Joji Tanaka, named the product soft cream, because it was soft and smooth, unlike the ice cream that he knew. Hiroaki Matsushima of the Japan Soft Cream Council secretariat explains that soft cream is freshly made ice cream, and that ice cream is soft cream that is frozen at temperatures of around -20 C so it can be delivered without melting. The difference in temperature creates a different texture. Ice cream is stored at temperatures from -25 to -30 C and sold in stores at temperatures below -8 C. Soft cream, on the other hand, is sold at temperatures from -5 to -7 C. To be more exact, ice cream is made by mixing mainly milk and other dairy products with sugar, oil, emulsifier and flavoring (aroma and taste) until creamy, and freezing the mixture. Depending on the amount of milk constituents, it is distinguished between ice cream (8% or more of milk fat within 5% or more of milk solids), ice milk (3% or more of milk fat within 0% or more of milk solids) and lacto ice (3% or more of milk solids). Shaved ice, ice candy, sherbet, gelato and others that contain less than 3% of milk constituents are called hyoka ( 氷菓 ; frozen sweets). The original form of ice cream appears in the Old Testament. There is also a story about a Roman emperor who ate snow and ice with a generous helping of milk, and accounts that say ice cream was made in since even farther back in time. Furthermore, it is said that the merchant Marco Polo ( ) ate what he called milk ice, or frozen milk, in an imperial court in, and introduced its recipe upon returning to Venice in 295, and also recorded it in his book Travels of Marco Polo. 6 Let s Cook and Eat the Tastes of the Season! Mackerel Simmered in Miso Sauce (Saba-misoni ) [Ingredients (4 servings)] 4 mackerel fillets piece of ginger root 50 ml water 50 ml sake /2 cup sugar Tbsp soy sauce 3 Tbsp miso [Preparation].Cut the ginger into thin slices. 2.Put the water, sake, sugar and soy sauce in a pot and heat it. When it comes to a boil, place the mackerel fillets in the pot so they do not overlap each other, and simmer for about 5 minutes over medium heat. 3.Ladle out some of the sauce from the pot into a small bowl. Use the sauce to dissolve the miso, then return it to the pot. Place a drop-lid on the pot and simmer for about 0 more minutes over low heat Has the hot summer gone and brought autumn to the town where you live? In Japan, many expressions have been used since olden days to express autumn, such as the autumn of appetites, the autumn of reading, the autumn of arts, the autumn of sports, and so on, primarily because autumn is a season in which temperatures and humidity are just right for comfort. Since this section is called Let s Cook and Eat the Tastes of the Season, let us satisfy your autumn of appetites by introducing saba-misoni, or mackerel simmered in miso sauce. There are many ingredients that come into season in autumn. Among the many seasonal fish of autumn, the saury is perhaps the most famous, but the species of mackerel called chub mackerel is also delicious around this time, with plenty of fat. The chub mackerel is thus also called autumn mackerel particularly during this season, and is highly popular among the Japanese people. Miso, a traditional Japanese seasoning that is made by fermenting soybeans and other grains, is good for the body, and whets the appetite with its salty-sweet taste. Saba-misoni combines the salty-sweet taste of miso and the umami (savory taste) of mackerel into a dish that goes perfectly with white rice. It is one of the tastes of home cooking in Japan. Owing to the strong taste of the sauce, the dish is sure to be enjoyed even by those who are not particularly fond of fish, and is guaranteed to satisfy your hunger. This comfortable season is perfect for any and all kinds of activities. 7 Technical Intern Life Efficient Use of Public Facilities 技能じっ実しゅう習 L i f e こうきょうしせつゆうこうりよう公共施設の有効利用 Thank you for sending photos to the Ginou Jissyu Days blog site. As introduced in this section in the previous issue of this newsletter, Ginou Jissyu Days features the daily activities of technical intern trainees through photographs received from members of supervising and implementing organizations, etc. We invite you to visit the site if you haven t already done so. Ginou Jissyu Days Frequently featured in Ginou Jissyu Days is technical intern trainees participation in local events. Participation in festivals and networking events requires the cooperation of members of your supervising and implementing organizations, but local communities also hold events and provide various services to local residents in their public facilities on a daily basis. All of you technical intern trainees possess a residence card that registers you as a resident of your respective community, so you have the same rights as other Japanese residents to use such facilities and services. Here, we introduce various local public facilities with the hopes that through your use of the facilities and participation in events you will experience Japanese culture in various ways, deepen relations with local residents and enrich your life as technical intern trainees in Japan. Different communities have different facilities, but they commonly include community centers, libraries, gymnasiums, recreation grounds and pools, for example. At the library, you can not only read and borrow books, but also view and borrow music CDs and movie DVDs for free. At sports facilities, you can use the facilities for a small fee, or participate in sports lessons they offer. You can also participate in various classes in language, music and other subjects that are held in public meeting/assembly rooms, also for a small fee. You can obtain information about such facilities and events in public relations magazines regularly issued by your municipality and distributed to each household. Some municipalities also issue a multi-language guidebook for their non-japanese residents, so you should inquire with your local government office. Using a public facility may sometimes require prior registration.
