43 (4A) 02DS ABC 5 Film melodrama can be seen as an expressive mode, a genre and an ideological form. In this course, we will discuss melodrama as a culturally situated genre and expressive mode. Melodrama incorporates a variety of stylistics and aesthetic conventions and directors have exploited those for various effects. As it relies heavily on emotions, pathos and sensationalism, melodrama has been criticized as low brow and relegated to the woman s genre. Recent theorists, however, point out melodrama s intertwinement with discourse of gender, race, nationalism and modernity In this seminar, students will become acquainted with a cross section of classic and contemporary Canadian writing. Drawing from a literary anthology selected by the students and instructor, we will discuss themes related to the Canadian national identity, such as the immigrant experience, the land as wilderness, and First Nations mythology. Some of the writers to be included in this seminar include Michael Ondaatje, Margaret Atwood and W.P. Kinsella. 45 (4B) 02DS ABC 5 This seminar approaches the writers and filmmakers working in Noir films in Hollywood from the 1930s to the late 1950s and beyond. We will examine the stylistic and thematic preoccupations of the genre, its roots in German Expressionism, as well as the influence of WWII, the Great Depression, and the detective novel. Finally, we will glance at the genre s repercussions beyond Hollywood, notably in French, Italian, and Japanese cinema In this seminar, students will become acquainted with a cross section of classic and contemporary Canadian writing. Drawing from a literary anthology selected by the students and instructor, we will discuss themes related to the Canadian national identity, such as the multicultural mosaic, English and French Canada, and small town life. Some of the writers to be included in this seminar include Yann Martel, Leonard Cohen and Alice Munro. We will read parts of the English translation together and discuss the argument and compare it with other similar approaches in philosophy, Global Studies and Environmental Studies. The seminar will start with an introduction to Peter Sloterdijk s work. Parts of the English translation, in particular, the introduction and final chapter will be read together in class because of their complicated philosophical thought and intriguing language. The book will be compared and discussed in relationship with other similar philosophical texts. The focus point of the discussions in the seminar will be on the construction of a philosophy of resiliency. active participation, presentation Basic text: Peter Sloterdijk: You Must Change Your Life (Polity Press 2013).
