The chief for pointing out, directing attention, are the pronominal nouns: ---. a. kore, this one, when the object is near, or possessed by, the speaker sore, that one, when the object is near or in possession of the person spoken to. and are, that one, when the object is far away, or not in possession of the person spoken to. Also :. b. kono this, sono that, and ano that, are words used as pronominal adjectives. They are used in the same relations respectively, as, -- kore, sore and are.. c. Besides these words, there are such derivatives as, --- konna, this kind of, sonna, that kind of, and anna, that kind of, and their equivalents ko iu, this called, so iu, that called,, and a iu, that called. p. The demonstrative, interrogative and indefinite pronouns, being marked by certain correspondences of sound and formation, may be best shown by means of a table. The adverbs formed from the same roots are also given there, so that the student may embrace all the kindred forms in one glance. He should note that

6 B. H. Chamberlain The chief thing to remember in connection with the Japanese nouns answering to our personal pronouns is the extremely rare use that is made of them. Except in cases of special emphasis or antithesis, the information concerning persons which is in European languages conveyed by means of pronouns, is left to be gathered from the context. nd ed. p. A Japanese will often discourse for half-an hour without using a single personal pronoun. The perpetual recurrence of watak shi and anata is one of the surest signs of a clumsy foreign speaker, translates his own idiom into Japanese, instead of thinking impersonally as the Japanese do. nd ed. p. Chamberlain The third section, --- Practice in the Colloquial, ---may attract the attention of some scholars of Japanese on account of the comparatively free use in it of personal pronouns, ---that is to say, a use of them much more frequent than was characteristic of social speech in Japan in former years. But a change in this direction is noticeably taking place in the intercourse of the younger generation of the Japanese people, along with their increasing familiarity with, and use of, the languages of the West.
