1 Main Topic 4: Business Presentations Lesson 30: Presenting a Report (20-25 minutes) Today, you will: 1. Learn useful vocabulary related to PRESENTING A REPORT. 2. Use of As - As. I. VOCABULARY Exercise 1: What s the meaning? (5-6 minutes) Choose the meaning of the underlined words from the choices that follow. Then practice using the words in your own sentences. 1. Nervousness ( 緊張感 ) is what I feel whenever I report the monthly sales. a. Relief b. Tension c. Dismay d. Excitement 2. While presenting, gestures ( 手ぶり ) help capture the attention of your audience. a. jokes b. volume c. laughter d. movements 3. (5-7 minutes) Read the following dialog with your tutor and try to use context clues to fill in the blanks with the most appropriate word. You can find the missing word from the pool of words at the bottom. Ben and Maria are preparing the Annual Sales Report to be presented to the major stockholders of the company. Ben: Maria, we have to make this report as (1) as possible so that we will not bore those who will be attending the meeting. Maria: I agree. However, we still have to put-in all the details because more importantly, our report has to be (2). Ben: Okay. Just remember to inject some (3) during the presentation okay? GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: Use of As As (5-6 minutes) (As As の用法 ) This structure is used to measure and compare items with similar proportions. Similar proportion means: having similarity in structure and equality in importance. ( この構文は類似した構造を持つ項目について比較をしたり 程度を計る目的で使われます 類似した構造とは 文章の構造上に類似性があり 同じぐらいの重要性を持つという意味です ) Let us try to analyze this sentence: Sasha presented as well as I did. ( 次の文章を分析してみましょう : サーシャは私と同じぐらい上手にプレゼンをしました ) 1) Similarity in structure - This sentence contains two independent clauses: ( 構造上の類似性 この文章は 2 つの独立節を含んでいます ) Sasha presented and I did Imbalance would result if two different structures are used i.e. if an independent clause is compared to another noun or pronoun only. Take for example, this sentence: Sasha presented as well as I. The first clause Sasha presented is compared only to the pronoun I resulting in a sentence which sounds imbalanced and incorrect. (2 つの異なる構造が使われている場合 バランスが悪くなってしまいます たとえば 独立節が別の名詞や代名詞のみと比較される場合などです 例として Sasha presented as well as I という文を取り上げてみましょう 最初の節 Sasha presented が代名詞の I のみと比較される結果 バランスが悪く 間違った文が作られてしまいます ) Page 3

4 2) Equality in importance - The structure as as is applicable in the sentence above because the sentence implies that both items: Sasha and I presented well. One did not present in a better way than the other. ( 等しい重要性 上の文では as as の構文が当てはまりますが これは Sasha と I の両方がプレゼンを上手にできたことを 文が示唆しているためです どちらか一方が より上手にプレゼンをしたというわけではないのです ) The structure as as is also used with a few fixed phrases such as: ( as as の構文はまた 以下のようないくつかの定型句と共に用いられます ) E.g. as soon as possible as much as I can as much as possible ( 可能な限りすぐに ) ( 可能な限りたくさん ) ( 可能な限りたくさん ) Remember: The items to be compared should be similar in structure and equal in importance. ( 比較の対象となる項目は 構造上似通っており重要性が等しいものが望ましいです ) Examples: Case ( 状況 ) Example ( 例 ) Comparing items of equal weight ( 同程度の項目を比較する ) Fixed phrases ( 定型句 ) He spoke as confidently as I did. ( 彼は私と同じぐらい堂々と話しました ) She is as brilliant as her other colleagues. ( 彼女は同僚と同じぐらい優秀です ) I will be there for the meeting as soon as I can.
