(5-7 minutes) Read the following dialog with your tutor and try to use context clues to fill in the blanks with the most appropriate word. You can find the missing word from the pool of words at the bottom. Mr. Blake, the company s marketing executive, is giving instructions to his assistant, Alice. Mr. Blake: Good morning, Alice. GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: Wrong Coordinating Conjunctions (5-6 minutes) ( 誤った等位接続詞 ) A coordinating conjunction indicates a logical relationship between two or more words, phrases or clauses of equal importance. However, using the wrong conjunction can change the meaning of your sentence or make it inaccurate. ( 等位接続詞は同様に重要な 2 つ以上の単語や句節の論理的関係性を表しますしかし誤って接続詞を用いると文の意味を変えてしまったり正確さを欠く文にしてしまう可能性があります ) Conjunction ( 接続詞 ) and but or so Logical Relationship ( 論理的関係性 ) shows similarity between items ( 項目間の類似性を示します ) shows a contrast between items ( 項目間の対照性を示します ) shows that items are optional ( 項目の任意性を示します ) shows that the second statement is the result of the first one (2 番目の記述が最初の記述の結果であることを示します ) Examples ( 例 ) The CEO set the meeting and everyone agreed to attend it. ( その CEO が会議を設定し皆参加することに同意しました ) The manager is always busy, but he finds time to help everyone in the team. ( その経営者は常に忙しくしているがチームの皆を助けるために時間を見つけてくれる ) We could have lunch at a nearby restaurant or we could pack our own food tomorrow. ( 私たちは明日近くのレストランでランチを済ますこともできるしそれぞれたべものを詰めてくることもできます ) Our sales representatives have not met their quota yet, so they are very stressed. ( わが社の営業社員たちはまだノルマを達成していないので激しいストレスにさらされています ) Wrong: I reserved a room in advance and I had to cancel the reservation at the last minute. ( 誤り : 私は事前に部屋を予約し直前にキャンセルしなければなりませんでした ) Correct: I reserved a room in advance but I had to cancel the reservation at the last minute. ( 正解 : 私は事前に部屋を予約しましたが直前にキャンセルしなければなりませんでした ) Page 3

4 Remember: You must also avoid starting sentences with coordinating conjunctions. Put them in the middle because they function as connectors. ( 等位接続詞から文を始めることはできません等位接続詞は文をつなぐ役割をするので文の途中に挿入しましょう ) Examples: Incorrect Example: ( 誤った例 ) I finished typing the documents yesterday. But I forgot to save the changes on my computer. Correct Example: ( 正しい例 ) I finished typing the documents yesterday, but I forgot to save the changes on my computer. ( 私は昨日書類を入力し終えましたがコンピューターに変更箇所を保存するのを忘れてしまいました ) Comprehension Check: Pretend that you are explaining to your boss why you were absent yesterday. Use a coordinating conjunction in your sentence. ( 昨日欠勤した理由を上司に説明しているところを演じてみましょう文の中で等位接続詞を使ってみましょう ) Page 4

5 Exercise 1: Incomplete Sentences (5-6 minutes) Choose the word or phrase that would best complete the following sentences. 1. Many people registered for the event only a few were able to attend. 2. We can book a hotel room stay at a guesthouse next week. 3. The board members disagreed on a lot of issues, the meeting lasted longer than scheduled. 4.
