GRAMMAR REVIEW: (II. 文法の復習 ) Topic: Subordinating Conjunctions (proper position in a sentence) (5-6 minutes) ( トピック : 従属接続詞 )(5-6 分 ) General Description: ( 概説 ) A subordinating conjunction, also called a subordinator, is used to connect an independent and a dependent clause together. The subordinating conjunction can go either at the beginning or in the middle of the sentence, depending on what is emphasized. ( 従属接続詞は 主節と主節意外の節を接続する接続詞です 従属接続詞は文の始めまたは文中でも使う事が出来ます ) Remember: 覚えて置くポイント :Some common examples of subordinating conjunctions are after, because, if, that, though, although, until before, unless, when, where, while, etc. ( 一般に良く使われる従属接続詞は after,because,if,that,though,although,until,before,unless,when,where,while, などです ) Page 3

4 Examples: ( 例 ) 1. In sentences starting with independent clauses, the dependent clause comes after the subordinating conjunction. ( 主節で始まる文は従属接続詞の後に主節意外の節を接続します Independent Clause ( 主節 ) Mr. Smith should prepare his presentation ( スミスさんはプレゼンの用意をすべきです ) Let us wait ( 待たせて下さい ) Subordinating Conjunction ( 従属接続詞 ) before (~ 前に ) until ( まで ) Dependent Clause( 主節意外の節 ) the director arrives. ( 部長が到着する ) the recognition of new members is over. ( 新社員の認識が過ぎる ) 2. If the first word of a sentence is a subordinating conjunction, it is immediately followed by a dependent clause. The dependent clause ends in a comma, and is immediately followed by an independent clause.
