23 Research on Academic Degrees and University Evaluation, No ABSTRACT New Issues of College Admissions and Admissions Officers in US Colleges and Universities MATSUI Noriatsu The duties, responsibilities, and roles of admissions officers are very important to US colleges and universities, and they are becoming increasingly diverse. As a professional group, the foremost job of such officers is to grant admissions to new entrants, including first-year and transferring students. However, they are facing new and previously unknown situations that are becoming increasingly diverse, among them a decrease in future high school graduates, harsher competition among colleges and universities, the need to cope with a varying body of new students, increasing parental expectations and intervention, and a depleting pool of scholarship funds. This paper considers recent trends and arguments about the roles of standardized tests in undergraduate admissions in the US, and argues that admissions policies are changing and becoming increasingly complicated and multiplex. Furthermore, new issues that admissions officers are facingand will face in the futureare discussed together with an introduction to their characteristics and natures in the job environment. It is argued that the already demanding work of admissions officers will become more challenging and complex.
