(5-7 minutes) Read the following dialog with your tutor and try to use context clues to fill in the blanks with the most appropriate word. You can find the missing word from the pool of words at the bottom. Mr. Young goes to the US immigration office to apply for legal residency. Mr. Young: Hi! I have an appointment with Mr. Donell, the immigration control officer. Mr. Donell: Hi! Are you Mr. Young? I am Mr. Donell. It s nice to meet you. Mr. Young: It s nice to meet you, too, Mr. Donell! Yes, I am Mr. Young and as you may know, I am here to process my (1). Mr. Donell: Oh yes! May I know your reason for (2) to the US? Mr. Young: Well, I wish to (3) here in the US because I was offered to teach Chinese culture at Asian University of America. Mr. Donell: I see. That s great! GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: Sentence Patterns Compound-complex (5-6 minutes) ( 文章パターン 複合.) A compound-complex sentence is comprised of at least two independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses. To better understand, let us review dependent and independent clauses: ( 複合文は 2 つ以上の主節と一つもしくはそれ以上の従属節から成ります よく理解するために 主節 従属節を復 習しましょう ) A dependent clause cannot act as a complete sentence because it needs to be subordinated to an independent clause to complete its meaning. It is introduced by a subordinating conjunction, such as when, because, if, whoever, etc. 従属節は その意味合いを完成させるために主節に付随する必要があるので それだけでは完成した一つの文章とし ては成り立ちません when, because, if, whoever のような従属する接続詞によって導入されるのです Example: When the tourist takes photos An independent clause makes a statement or asks a question that acts as a complete sentence. 主節は 完全な文章として機能する叙述や質問を作ります Example: The tourist takes photos. 3

4 Remember: Because compound-complex sentences are normally longer than other sentences, it is very important to punctuate them correctly. ( 注意 : 複合文は通常 他の文章よりも長いので 正しく句読点をつけることがとても重要です ) Examples: Though Glen lives in Japan at the moment, he plans to move to another country someday; however, his wife disapproves of it. ( グレンは今のところ日本に住んでいるが いつか違う国に移る予定である しかし彼の妻は同意していない ) After Jane went to Africa last year, she found the country beautiful, so she finally moved there this year. ( 昨年ジェーンはアフリカに行って その国を気に入り 今年ついに移り住んだ ) Comprehension Check: Using a compound-complex sentence, relate instances when you might want to immigrate to another country.
