A Study on Motives for Entering University and Reasons for Studying at the University of the National Institute of Fitness and Sports Students Comparison by gender, academic year, and courses Fumiko HONDA Juwol BANGHirofumi KINTAKA Shunichi TAKESHITA Abstract This study used 21 items for measuring motives for entering university, as well as 21 items for assessing the reasons for entering university. There were 214 survey respondents, majoring in Integrated Sport Science and Budo at the National Institute of Fitness & Sports in Kanoya (NIFS) whose responses were used for comparisons of gender, academic year and major. The survey administered for this study included 16 items and considered the three factors of Title and Employment for Entrance (TEE), Extension of Capability for Entrance (ECE), Enjoying Student Life for Entrance (ESE) of the motives for entering university. It also included 17 items and considered the three factors of Title and Employment to be in the University (TEU), Extension of Capability to be in the University (ECU), No Purpose to be in the University (NPU) with regard to reasons for studying at the university. The results of the correlation analysis showed strong positive correlations between TEE and TEU, and between ECE and ECU. The three-way ANOVA measuring motives for entering university revealed significance of ECE higher third than first grade of male Budo students, first than third grade of female Budo students, female than male of first grade Budo students, male than female of third Budo students. Furthermore, the three-way ANOVA assessing the reasons for entering the university revealed significance of ECU higher Integrated students than Budo of first/ fourth male student, third female students. Moreover, there were significantly higher female than male of first grade Budo students, male than female of third grade Budo students. The findings of this study suggest that the student except a first grade of Budo" may exhibit important improvement in self-capability, extension of self-talent and area of strength for chosen university.
