10 Arts subjects, such as Japanese, social studies, physical education, art, and foreign languages, as well as basic specialized subjects, such as mathematics and science, are collectively called liberal arts, which are taught by the faculty members of the Department of Liberal Arts. The college of technology offers almost the same credit hours in liberal arts as those that can be earned for similar subjects taught in the science and mathematics course at a regular senior high school and in the first and second years of the department of engineering at university. At senior high school, however, students have to spend more time preparing for university entrance examinations. Furthermore, many classes offered at senior high school cover the same subject areas that are targeted by those classes offered at university. Considering these situations, we can assume that they can study more efficiently and more intensively at the college of technology in the same five years. Although most liberal arts are offered to lower graders, higher graders can also study some of them as electives or other subjects, which helps reinforce their abilities and educational backgrounds. 12 CAD To train our students to be engineers that can design and manufacture mechanical apparatuses that are strikingly fresh in conception, the Department of Mechanical Engineering has set the following academic and educational targets: () Our students must acquire basic academic skills relating to mechanical engineering to apply them to real problems; () can conceptualize, design and manufacture mechanical systems; and () can harness basic academic skills relating to both mechanical engineering and electronic/ computer engineering to design and manufacture mechanical systems that are the embodiments of mechatronics. Aimed at meeting the targets, the curriculum developed by this department consists of three subject groups: Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Dynamics, and Mechatronics / Control Engineering. The Manufacturing Engineering group provides opportunities in which our students learn design methods employing state-of-the-art 3D CAD, and also study mechanical processing technology at the Manufacturing Education Center. The Mechanical Dynamics group helps our students to learn the theoretical fundamentals regarding the main components of mechanical engineering, such as material dynamics, fluid dynamics, thermo dynamics, and mechanical dynamics, and to understand the basics of mechanical structures and their operational principles. The Mechatronics / Control Engineering group allows our students to become familiar with mechanical controllers and master basic technology for mechanical intelligence. 14 LSI The Department of Electrical Engineering provides a comprehensive program regarding electricity. It targets a diverse range of subject areas, from computers including personal computers, the Internet, robots introduced by Japanese businesses to the international community, semiconductors, such as LSIs, whose technological development has been intensifying competition between Japan and the U.S., new communication technologies including satellite and fiber-optic communication technologies, and mobile communication technologies represented by cellular phones, to the use of renewable energy that is indispensable for building a sustainable society. This department is designed to give our students a solid grounding in electrical engineering to create excellent electrical engineers in the future. Using teach fundamentals intensively, and applications extensively as its educational motto, this departments curriculum consists of Information / Communication, Electronic Properties of Materials / Devices, and Energy / Control. For our students to grasp foundational thinking and knowledge in class, the department has devised educationally effective methods, one of which closely integrates lectures with lab classes. To develop research skills and great creativity, our students conduct their graduation research in the faculty members offices for a year, voluntarily address research challenges under the faculty members individual instructions, and learn to follow primary research methods and prepare research papers. We also attentively broaden our students social experience and viewpoints: they take internships to obtain work experience at businesses; and they visit plants to be better-informed, too. 16 The Department of Electronic Engineering aims to train our students to be electronic engineers that will support the information society in the 21st century. To familiarize our students with electronic technology, we have arranged, in a balanced fashion, both basic and applied subjects regarding electronic materials, electronic properties of materials, electronic circuits, electronic measurements, radio waves / communication, image processing, and computers that constitute core technologies. This department places emphasis on the development of basic academic skills, practicability of application and the ability to solve problems. Those skills and abilities are necessary for engineers to have interest in advanced technology and respond to the real world. Therefore, we constantly balance lectures and laboratory classes, and according to social changes, we adjust their methods and targets. We also provide opportunities at which our students can have social experience, such as visits to plants, internships, and training trips. Our students can conduct graduation research under small group instruction given by different specialized faculty members. Through graduation research, they experience approaches to and methods of R&D, and develop the capability of employing great creativity to take up challenges. Accordingly, they are trained to be engineers who are also qualified members of society. TOKYO NATIONAL COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY

18 Today, we live in the information age. Computer science and information technology are used not only in computers and communication networks but also in every aspect of industrial activity and daily life ranging from database construction, information retrieval, systems control, medicine and social work to entertainment. Especially in the area of the development of embedded systems, a number of sophisticated engineers are required in order to achieve a great variety of innovations through the combination of communication, control and other types of technologies. To nurture persons capable of meeting the technological needs in this growing innovation age and future, the department is aimed to develop young engineers with the following personal qualities: (1) Achievement of basic learning and having a capacity to learn additional knowledge and skill (2) Demonstration of an excellent personality and a strict discipline as an engineer (3) Mastering of sufficient knowledge and skill in creation, design and manufacturing To cultivate ideal engineers, the department places importance on experiments and exercises in addition to classroom lectures so that each of the students will be able to acquire the imagination, communication skills and all other abilities required to be a respectable engineer and member of society. 20 IT DVD Chemistry (material engineering) plays a leading role in technological development. It is a requisite for biotechnology, solutions to environmental and energy issues, and the development of new materials as well as nanotechnology and information technology (IT). It is also a key technology for familiar fields, such as global warming mitigation, cellular phones, fiber-optic communication, and DVDs. Facilitating new technological innovation, chemistry is an absolute necessity for the revival of this manufacturing technology-oriented country. Providing education under these conditions, the Department of Chemical Science and Engineering has set the following academic targets: (1) our students must acquire basic academic skills and the ability to make use of applications; (2) must master useful laboratory techniques; (3) must recognize the responsibilities and ethics required of engineers; (4) must gain and apply the knowledge of mathematics, physics and IT; (5) must develop skills in logical thinking, description, presentation and communication; and (6) must obtain global viewpoints by observing ground-breaking research being conducted. 22 The Advanced Course consists of the following three majors: Curricula have been designed so that students at the Departments of Mechanical Engineering and Computer Science in the Regular Course can continue studying at the Advanced Course of Mechanical and Computer Systems Engineering; Students at the Department of Electrical Engineering and Electronic Engineering in the Regular Course can continue studying at the Advanced Course of Electrical and Electronic Engineering; and students at the Department of Chemical Science and Engineering in the Regular Course can continue studying at the Advanced Course of Chemical Science and Engineering. All the departments in the Advanced Course can also admit students from other colleges of technology and those who currently work. Students in the Advanced Course must earn the predetermined number of credits (62 or more credits) to complete the course. To receive bachelor degrees, they must pass the examination administered by the National Institution for Academic Degrees and University Evaluation. One of the features of our Advanced Course is that it actively encourages our students to obtain internationality. While freshmen and freshwomen in the Advanced Course must undertake one-month internships as special training classes in the summer break, 12 students underwent training experience in Asia, Europe and United States of America (Hawaii) in When conducting special research, each Advanced Course student must select a research topic, and some of them present their research findings in both international and domestic academic conferences. Some of the General and Common Specialized Subjects in this Course: English Seminar I, II, Small Business and Venture, Theory of Linear Space, Nuclear Physics, Ethics for Engineers, etc. Advanced Course of Mechanical and Computer Systems Engineering TOKYO NATIONAL COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY
