Human Welfare 8 1 2016 A Pilot Study of Favoritism and Grief among Takarazuka Revue fans ABSTRACT Yukihiro Sakaguchi* 1 Yasue Goto* 2 The aim of this study was to investigate the nature of favoritism toward Takarasiennes (Takarazuka actresses) and fans grief when their favorite member leaves the Takarazuka Revue Company. A total of 106 Takarazuka fans answered questionnaires concerning favoritism toward Takarasiennes (Scale for Favoritism toward Takarasiennes : SFT) and their experiences of grief. The mean length of time subjects had spent as fans was 15.1 years. The mean number of plays watched per year was 10.4. As a result, factor analysis with promax rotation revealed that the SFT had four major factors : fascination psychological dependence possessiveness and respect. The number of plays watched per year was shown to be related to the level of psychological dependence. Persons who had a number of friends with similar interests showed significantly higher levels of both fascination and possessiveness. The results showed that 71 (67%) subjects had experienced the departure of their favorite member. More than 30% of these experienced thirty different varieties of grief reaction, and more than 70% experienced fourteen different varieties. Interestingly, all of them indicated I wish the Takarasienne happiness in her new life. In conclusion, we clarified four aspects composing the structure of favoritism toward Takarasiennes. The findings also suggested that the departure of a favorite Takarasienne has a heavy impact on individual fans, causing them to experience a wide variety of grief reactions.
