A week from now will be an important meeting with our business associates in the South Coast. Simon: Who will be the (1) of the conference? Wouldn t we need a bigger room for this meeting since our business associates will be coming over? Ms. Park: I forgot to tell you that they will not be coming to the conference in person. We will be holding the meeting using teleconferencing instead. As such, I need you to prepare (3) (4) equipment. Simon: That one s noted. Ms. Park: And you have to cancel all your appointments with the marketing staff because I don t want any (5). You have to work closely with me on those days. 4 II. GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: Subordinating Conjunction (5-6 minutes) ( 従属接続詞 ) Subordinating conjunction is a word or phrase added at the beginning of an independent clause. By adding a subordinating conjunction, an independent clause becomes a subordinate clause. It also joins a subordinate and another independent clause to make a complex sentence. ( 従属接続詞は 重要な節の先頭に置かれる単語や句です 従属接続詞が置かれること で 独立節は従属節へと変化します 従属接続詞は 主節と従属節を結びつけ 複文を 完成させます ) Independent Clause ( 独立節 ) The man was watching TV. ( その男性はテレビを観ていました ) I want to drink icecold water. ( 私はよく冷えた飲み物が欲しいです ) Subordinating Conjunction + Independent Clause = subordinate clause ( 従属説 + 独立節 = 従属節 ) when (~ の時 ) Because (~ なので ) someone knocked on the door. ( 誰かがドアをノックしました ) the weather is hot. ( 暑い天気です ) Complex Sentence ( 複文 ) The man was watching TV when someone knocked on the door. ( 誰かがドアをノックした時 その男性はテレビを観ていました ) I want to drink icecold water because the weather is hot. ( 暑い天気なので 私はよく冷えた飲み物が欲しいです ) Page 4
5 The subordinating clause can come before the main clause, but it should be separated by a comma. ( 従属節は主節の前に置かれますが 2 つの節はコンマで区切るのが望ましいです ) Although (~ だけれども ) After (~ の後 ) Subordinate Clause ( 従属節 ) the bags were heavy. ( そのバッグは重かったです ) the report was submitted ( そのレポートが提出されました ) Independent Clause ( 独立節 ) The man was able to carry them to bus station. ( その男性はそれをバス停まで運ぶことができました ) all the members of the team rejoiced. ( チームのメンバー全員が喜びました ) Complex Sentence ( 複文 ) Although the bags were heavy, the man was able to carry them to the bus station. ( そのバッグは重かったけれども 男性はバス亭まで運ぶことができました ) After the report was submitted, all the members of the team rejoiced. ( そのレポートを提出した後 チームのメンバー全員が喜びました ) Remember: Use subordinating conjunctions to make your sentences less choppy. ( 従属節を用い 滑らかな文を作成しましょう ) Examples: Choppy: ( 細切れな文の例 ) 1. I like my teacher. She is strict. ( 私は自分の先生が好きです 彼女は厳しいです ) 2. You accept a job offer. You cannot turn back. ( あなたは仕事の申し出を受け入れました 後戻りはできません ) 3. I didn t stop jogging. I collapsed. I didn t stop jogging until I collapsed. ( 私はへたり込むまでジョギングを中断しませんでした ) Comprehension Check: Have you performed a task well at work? Write a sentence about that task and use the subordinating conjunction because to state one reason for your good performance.
