Changing power of the religious right in the United States 2008 presidential election and new tide in the evangelicals The religious right has enjoyed an unusually intimate relationship with the Bush White House and looks to be at its zenith of its political power. However, the first generation leaders like Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson have either passed away or are losing political muscle, and the Christian Coalition, which served as the control center of the religious right and powerful election machine for its hand-picked candidates, is on the verge of extinction. These developments have resulted in the lack of cohesion among leaders of the religious right and chaotic endorsements of Republican candidates in the 2008 presidential election. Moreover, a crack is looming large in the formerly monolithic evangelical Christians. Among the new generation of evangelical leaders, there have arisen some powerful pastors who are expanding their political appeal from the traditional religious issues like abortion and same-sex marriage to some liberal causes like global warming, AIDS and poverty on the African continent. This move has invited open criticism from old generation leaders. The lack of charismatic leadership and organization in the religious right movement and looming crack among the evangelicals may soon deprive the movement of its political power, because its ability to deliver huge evangelical votes to Republican candidates was the source of the religious right political muscle.
