4 II. GRAMMAR REVIEW: ( 文法復習 ) Topic: Modals Part 1- could, would, should, ought (5-6 minutes) ( 叙法 ) General Description: All the auxiliary verbs except be, are called modals. Modals have no meaning by themselves. They only exist in their helping form. The function of modals is to help other verbs to express a meaning. Lastly, modals cannot act alone as the main verb of the sentence. ( be を除く全ての助動詞は 法助動詞と呼ばれます 法助動詞はそれ自体は意味を持っておらず 他の動詞が意味 を表現するのを助ける形式しか取らないので 単体で文章の主動詞として機能することはありません ) The modal verbs are: ( 法助動詞 ) can/could- to express ability, permission, and possibility ( 能力 許可 可能性 ) will/would- to express willingness and intention ( 意思と意図 ) ought to- to express what is right or correct ( 何が正しいかを表現する ) shall/should- to offer, suggest and to ask what to do ( 何をすべきかを提案する 頼む ) Remember: ( 注意 ) Modals are never used with other auxiliary verbs (do, does, did, etc.) ( 法助動詞は決して助動詞と一緒には使われません ) Modals never change form: you can never add an s or ed into modal verb. ( 法助動詞は s や ed を付けられません ) Modals are never followed by to, with the exception of ought to. ( 法助動詞は ought to を除き to が続くことはありません ) Examples: ( 例 ) 1.
