Modals used in the present tense (can, will, shall, ought to, must, need, may) ( 現在時制で使われる場合 ) Ex. The class valedictorian ought to deliver his valedictory address. modal (ought to) + main verb (deliver) ( 例 : クラス総代は 告別演説をしなくてはなりません 法助動詞 ought to + 主動詞 deliver ) You must study hard to get good grades in class. modal (must) + main verb (study) ( 授業で良い成績を取るには 一生懸命勉強しなくてはなりません 法助動詞 must + 主動詞 study ) 2. Modals used in the past tense (would, should, could, might) ( 過去時制で使われる場合 ) Ex. The parents should have attended the graduation of their children. modal (should) + have + past participle of the verb (attended) ( 例 : 両親は 彼らの子供の卒業式に出席すべきでした 法助動詞 should + have + attended の過去分詞形 ) She might have graduated with honors if she had studied seriously. modal (might) + (have) + past participle of the verb (graduated) ( もっと真剣に勉強していれば 彼女は優秀な成績で卒業できたかもしれません 法助動詞 might + have + graduated の過去分詞形 ) Remember: Two or more modals cannot be present in a single sentence at the same time.
