3 II. GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: Adverbs (5-6 minutes) ( 副詞 ) An adverb is a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another adverb. Normally, you can identify an adverb through function, form and position. ( 副詞は動詞や形容詞 あるいは別の副詞を修飾する語句です 通常 副詞はその機能 や形式 そして配置から見極めることができます ) FUNCTION: Adverbs are mainly used to describe verbs, adjectives and other adverbs. ( 機能 : 副詞は主に動詞 形容詞 その他の副詞を説明するのに用いられます ) Ex: Mr. Cliff quickly read the document. (quickly describes the verb read) ( 例 : クリフ氏はその書類を素早く読みました ( 素早く は動詞 読む を説明しています )). FORM: Most adverbs end in -ly (ex: excellently, silently). ( 形式 : ほどんどの副詞は末尾が ly で終わります ( 例 :excellently, silently)) Most of the time, adverbs are formed by adding -ly to adjectives (ex: quick -> quickly, rough ->roughly). ( 多くの場合 副詞は形容詞に ly を付けることで作られます ( 例 :quick quickly, rough roughly) There are also adverbs that do not follow a formal pattern (ex: always, never). ( 通常の形式に当てはまらない副詞も存在します ( 例 :always, never) Ex. Ms. Velasco always neatly organizes her table. ( 例 : ヴェラスコさんはいつもテーブルを綺麗に整えます POSITION: Usually, adverbs can be found before or after the word it modifies. There are also times that it is placed at the start or at the end of the sentence. ( 配置 : 副詞はたいてい 修飾される語の後ろに置かれます また文の先頭や末 尾に置かれることもあります ) Page 3

4 Remember: Not all words that end in -ly are adverbs. These words are usually adjectives or nouns and not adverbs. (ex: jolly, ugly, ally, jelly, rally, tally ). (ly で終わる語の中には副詞ではないものもあります その場合 それは形容詞か名詞であることが多いです ) Examples: The secretary properly arranged the documents on the folder. ( その秘書はフォルダー内の書類をきちんと整理しました ) The director of the company always attends meetings. ( その会社の重役はいつも会議に出席します ) Now, they will implement the policy.
