VOCABULARY Exercise 1: What s the meaning? (5-6 minutes) Choose the meaning of the underlined words from the choices that follow. Then practice using the words in your own sentences. 1. (5-7 minutes) Read the following dialog with your tutor and try to use context clues to fill in the blanks with the most appropriate word. You can find the missing word from the pool of words at the bottom. Mr. Tuff inquires about the upcoming events in the company. He tries to plan things with his secretary, Ms. Jones. Mr. Tuff: What were the decisions made during the meeting? Ms. Jones: The Planning Committee decided to (1) a writing seminar for the junior staff. Mr. Tuff: That s a splendid idea. GRAMMAR REVIEW: Topic: Subject and Verb Agreement Rules Part 5 (5-6 minutes) ( 主語と動詞の一致に関する決まりパート 5) 1. When gerunds are used as the subject of a sentence, they take the singular form of the verb, but when they are linked by and, they take the plural form. ( 動名詞を文の主語として用いる場合 動詞は単数形となります しかし 動名詞を and で結合したものが主語になる場合 動詞は複数形となります ) Gerunds are nouns formed by adding ing to verbs. A gerund takes a singular verb unless two or more gerunds are linked using and. ( 動名詞は 原型動詞の末尾に ing を付けて作る名詞です 2 つ以上の動名詞が and で 結合されていない限り 動名詞に続く動詞は単数形になります ) Singular Eating makes Eating makes me happy. Plural Painting and singing are Painting and singing are her hobbies. ( 単数形 ) ( 複数形 ) ( 食べること ) (~にする) ( 食べることは私を幸せにしてくれ ます ) ( 絵を描くことと (~である) ( 絵を描くことと歌うことは彼女の 歌うこと ) 趣味です ) 2. Collective nouns like herd, senate, class, crowd, etc. usually take a singular verb form. (herd senate class crowd などの集合名詞に続く動詞は 通常単数形になります ) Collective nouns are nouns that take things and people as one unit, thus, taking a singular verb. But if collective nouns are taken as two or more units, a plural form of verb is used. ( 物や人をの集まりを一体として扱う名詞を集合名詞といい 単数形動詞で受けます 集合名詞を 2 つ以上の単位として扱う場合は 複数形動詞で受けます ) Page 3

Titles of books, movies, novels, etc. are treated as singular and take a singular verb. ( 書籍や映画 小説のタイトルは単数として扱い 単数形動詞で受けます ) Singular The Three Musketeers is The Three Musketeers is an interesting novel. Plural Avatar and Twilight are Avatar and Twilight are both good. ( 単数形 ) ( 三銃士 ) (~である) ( 三銃士 は面白い小説です ) ( アバター と ( 複数形 ) トワイライト ) (~である) ( アバター も トワイライト も良い作品です ) Remember: Use singular verbs with gerunds, collective nouns and titles unless two or more of them are linked and taken as subjects. Take note that only the subject affects the verb.
