The relationship between creativity of Haiku and idea search space YOSHIDA Yasushi This research examined the relationship between experts' ranking of creative Haiku (a Japanese character poem including a word Kigo which indicates the season) and an area of "idea search space" that was defined by semantic distance between elements (Kigo and assorted phrase) of the Haiku. Semantic distances between these words were defined by the hit frequency of keyword search with these words using kinds of databases. These databases were the World Wide Web and the Asahi Digital News Archives (a database of newspaper articles). Higher hit frequency were obtained from the search with less creative Haiku than highly creative Haiku. These results suggested that highly creative Haiku had a tendency to be constructed from far distant Kigo and an assorted phrase. These findings revealed the possibility of generalization of the framework of idea search space and corresponded to the theories of Haiku inventions. We also discussed these findings in terms of divergent and convergent thinking in inventing Haikus. Key words creative thinking, verbal task, Haiku, evaluation of creativity Sternberg & Lubart,
